Age research for video
Target audience research
For my target audience research I created a questionnaire on Survey Monkey and asked people from the age demographic to answer. I have received 24 answers and I will summarise the data bellow and compare them to some secondary research data I found from 2018 about favourite music genres in America.
The Questions:
Analysis of examiners report - Section C
AO1 1: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework of
media
AO2 2: Apply knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework of media to
evaluate academic theories
Summary of key points
- Candidates should always ensure that they answer the specific question that has been
asked rather than simply writing everything they know and can remember about a given
topic or product.
- Theory should always be used selectively, appropriately, purposefully and to meaningful
effect. It should be applied and explored rather than simply downloaded or included for
its own sake.
- Candidates would benefit from further practice in evaluating theories. As well as
preparing them for the question in Component 2 that assesses AO2 2, this is likely to
facilitate a greater critical understanding of the usefulness of relevant theories and how
they can be meaningfully applied.
- Candidates should be able to discuss the influence of relevant contexts (e.g. historical,
social, cultural, economic) on the set products they have studied.
- Candidates should be able to refer to specific aspects of the set products they have
studied to support and illustrate the points they make. Responses that only refer to the
covers of the set magazines are likely to be self-penalising.
- The target audience demographic was altered; for example, the work was for a narrower
age range or, in some cases, a completely different audience. The target audience
should be evident in the mode of address, as well as in the use of media language and
representations to engage the appropriate group.
Textbook 2 - read the oversights 272-281 (Music). What can you take from this to make your work better?
3-3.30 minutes, at least 3 locations, wide range of camera shots, clear narrative and use the original name of the artist, band and track title.
Use original title and masthead, one main image of cover
300 words - includes and interview with artist, 1 main image and at least 2 smaller images, pull quotes
careful choice of lighting and clothing to fit the mood of the song and genre
Fans must be able to alpine themselves with the mainstream record label and the video and person being presented must meet the other people associated with the label
how will codes and conventions convey the genre identified in my research
will you challenge stereotypes or subvert to norms, how will you make this obvious?

Music video research
COLUMBIA RECORDS MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS
MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS
See you again - Tyler, the creator
- The video begins with a black screen, this is influential in helping the audience get into his lonely mindset that is further developed throughout the music video.
- The first shots have Tyler looking not interested in reality and is daydreaming about the girl he is talking about.
- In these opening shots there are people surrounding him being active and doing things while he is not doing anything and appears to be thinking, showing the juxtaposition between him and others on this ship.

- In all these shots the camera moves with tyler showing he is the key figure in this video

- The camera pans out far when his loved one starts singing, this is when we see his ship and her small boat.
- She is sat in a yellow raincoat with 3 other faceless people They are all faced away from the ship Tyler was on in different directions showing they are far apart and can't find each other.
- They are in a small life boat suggesting she is lost at sea without him. This is further indicated by the hazardous colouring of white, red and yellow.
- The people proceed to jump out of the boat leaving her completely alone
- Tyler is pictured dancing on an aircraft carrier ahead of some officers showing his importance in the video.

- He is shown walking on peoples heads, dancing showing his importance. The soldiers are marching the other direction to where tyler is walking showing he does not want to go to ‘war’.
- Tyler the creator is a rapper which is in line with many of the other artists with Columbia. He is a mainstream artist also alining with the other talent listed by Columbia.

Human - Rag’n’Bone Man

- A close up shot of his mouth shows how his message is going to be shown
- He is pictured in a desolate bleak building which is dirty and industrial as he is trying to appear as a normal person. He is in a bold jacket showing his difference for his regular surroundings showing he is special.
- In the first verse hes is mainly on a regular brick wall and he is singing the song with other people with different genders, racises and faces showing we are all the same

- They uses a close up shot for this to focus on the face to make the video as serious as the message it is portraying.
- In the chorus there are action shots of him singing showing his passion.
- A medium shot is used for the people he is showing. They start from far and come closer to show more of the impurities that make them human. This is powerful as these people are from many different backgrounds and have ‘real problems’
- In the second verse we begin by seeing a man sitting on a chair upset as said in the verse, we cannot see anyones faces here but the medium shot means we can see his body.

- The verse ends with the man crying walking out of his dark room looking ready to take something on. A long low angle shot is used to create his power and see his whole body, this is the first time we see anyones full body showing the progression in the song.
- In the chorus the people are shown from all angles with a 360 shot being taken of them, they are all standing proud and not cowering like before after showing their full body, showing they are proud of who they are and not shy anymore.
- A slow pan shot from far to a close up end the video and the song is getting slower and the message he alluded to at the beginning is finished.

- Rag'n'Bone man was signed before releasing this viral song that has many millions of hits. The song was played on most popular radio stations and his album was top of the charts for 2 weeks globally. this matches with there other artists popularity.
Paradise - Coldplay
- This music video has a deeper meaning about how animals are being captured and locked up against their own will. In the video the elephant attempts to go back to his own habitat from England. This message is similar with Colplays previous music videos and the message is positive like the one given in 'Pan fried' and Up and Up'
- The opening shots sets the scene of where the elephant should be living with dramatic sunsets making home be seen as glorious.
- This quickly cuts away to an elephant (Coldplay's lead singer in a costume) behind bars, showing how the zoo is like prison to animals. This is further shown through the tallies on the wall that are associated with days in prison.
- Handheld shots of the elephant breaking out of the zoo shows the situations intensity and the camera shaking makes this more apparent.
- once escaping the elephant rides a boris bike to a London tube station, this iconography makes the audience aware how far he is from home.
- The elephant is shown busking with the lyrics to the video. A medium shot is used with the elephant at the centre of the screen as we are following his journey.
- With this money he buys a plane ticket and then sneaks onto a plane.
- The tube train is used as a cutting method as the elephant is stood on the platform and when the train zooms past he appears on it, quick cuts like these keeps the story moving and not stagnated.
- Handheld camera shots are used when the elephant is sneaking on showing the intensity of the situation.
- Dramatic shots are used when flying in beautiful scenery to show she is finally going home.
- Back in her home country she is once again begging with the signs, however this time she is dancing with them instead of just sitting down implying her change of mood from being closer to her home. In England when busking she lay down and got up like a dead person showing England is dead for her and she's going back to where she's ‘alive’
- The chorus is used as a unicycle montage with close ups of the singular wheel showing her impoverished times can't afford a proper bike. Also, it could link to the circus as both are used in the display and this could be another form of imprisonment from Coldplay.
- The elephant tries to get a lift but no one accepts and the audience can see the desperation as the sun is setting and she still has not found home.
- When she sees her family she throws down her unicycle in slow motion and runs towards three other elephants who are playing instruments.
- They are now all dancing and happily united, this could be what Coldplay mean by ‘paradise’
- The fade to white when a close up guitar shop happened now shows them on stage in front of thousands. This could show how family/friends make life more enjoyable and fruitful
- The action shots on stage of the instruments playing shows how they have changed from their home but will always go back as it is still home
- The music video ends when the performance is over and the elephants are celebrating to the crowds, which then cuts to elephants running towards to camera, reunited and joyful.
- Coldplay is a very popular band like the other acts that Parlophone work with such as The Beatles and David bowie.

Pan-Fried - Kano
- Kano is a small UK artist who originally started on grime but since has moved into hip hop. This song is about his roots and where he has come from to now how he lives. It gives a positive message about despite disadvantages from child poverty people can still change their past and it shines a light on this area.
- The opening scenes have still shots of a desolate lower income area with shots including a worn out basketball hoop not being used possibly implying our generation prefer to stay indoors now.
- There are many shots of houses in dim lighting possibly implying the negativity of the area.
- this continues to a shot including a public diary being blocked by broken pieces of doors, this shows the youth are not reading or caring about their future.
- In all these opening shots the buildings look broken and mouldy, this is because he is stating ‘money is his motivation’ and the reason it to help the people of his hometown grown possibly.
- He is spraying champagne in the middle of the road, this expensive item surrounded by the negativity of the area including the gloomy clouds, telephone pylons and rustic fences shows he is positive and thriving in negativity.
- He walks around his area seeing no one as everyone has left, there are some people shown getting groceries and an estate playing but apart from that it is empty
- close up shots just showing Kano shows his passion in the words he is saying - low angle shots reflect the power he now has over his poor area.
- Still shots of shut down buildings show how the area is not moving with modern society and is being left behind because of it
- A close up to long shot is shown of the featured artist getting his hair done outside shows how shops have shut down so this is how they do things to save money.
- He continues the song with similar shots of the area and is shown buying more champagne showing he celebrations he is having with his current life.
- He has now met up with more people and they are shown supporting him.
- This shot continues on for 30 seconds showing the love he has from his home area and how they're proud of his success.

WEBSITE ANALYSIS

Magazine front page analysis
I decided to also analyse some main stream rock magazines to understand how they format their posts and what makes them stand out as this genre. I may be doing a variation of rock for my music video as from my current knowledge it is a popular genre for the age demographic
- The cover is dominated by an image by the lead singer of Panic at the disco, he is shown as an opposing figure - typical of the rock genre
- He is pointing at audience and looking directly at the audience drawing attention to the cover.
- He is dressed wearing rings in a suit which is not typical of the genre
- His head is covering the logo as the brand is so popular and well known in the genre.
- The cover mentions many famous bands with the key interviews and band in larger text.
- There is a free art print to incentivise purchases
- All the covers of this magazine have a white background with a fisheye lens to keep the audience looking at the main person.

COLUMBIA RECORDS RESEARCH
Columbia records was founded in 1887 and is the oldest brand in pre recorded sound history.
They are a premium subsidy company of Sony music entertainment, on the sony website the different artists listing differ which I am not sure why.
Some of their most popular artists include Beyonce, Adele and the Script. These artists alongside others show their pop identity and what kind of identity the label wants to have.
On their homepage they have all the artists they own and the dates of the shows you can see them on. They have links to tickets enticing the audience to purchase the tickets to their concerts.
PARLOPHONE RESEARCH
Parlophone was founded "Parlophone" by Carl Lindstrom Company in 1896.
The artists in their lists are mostly in the pop and indie pop genre which is the target audience they are trying to attract.
Among their most famous artists is Coldplay, the Beatles, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and Lily Allen.
Their most famous artist is Coldplay who have begun to move into the more pop genre, fitting with the other artists on their list.
Parlophone help produce the music of these artists and gives them help with marketing and producing.
AUDIENCE RESEARCH
- Make a 3 - 3:30 minute music video - 3+ locations - must meet brief and age target audience
- Front cover and double paged spread advertising the music video
- Different uses/choices of what lighting and locations can have a different effect on how the audience reacts and feels about the message
- Fans know the labels and how they have very big names and will be intrigued by the video because of they trust the quality
- Planning - does this match the target audience brief?
- How will it reflect the labels messages and views - Pick the music label wisely as both have contrasting artists and messages.
- Will you challenge normalised views of society to make a deeper message or just try to tell a story - Is this inline with the music label that you picked?
- How will you represent the artist through use of visual codes and technical codes?
- Present your ideas to classmates to see their thoughts and ideas about how to improve it
research different locations as this is a large part of the video. Picking locations is very important as it will set the mood for the rest of the video and it will dictate what shots you can achieve
- Make a story board of the different shots - make sure this is detailed as without it the music video will not connect together well.
- Consider codes and conventions throughout to make sure you stay to the brief
- In the magazine pages you have to focus a lot about the persons image and what they are trying to represent - This is a crucial part as it will dictate all other aspects of such as colour and the pieces that go into it.
- Interview the artist for spread - What questions will I ask to give the best responses.
